Where is São Miguel do Gostoso?

On the north coast of Rio Grande do Norte, the state at the northeastern corner of Brazil, next to Touros and about 100 km from Natal. It started as a fishing village and still feels like one: sand streets, boats coming in with the catch of the day and low houses on the way to the beach.

The wind put Gostoso on the map. It blows firm and constant for much of the year and brought kitesurfing, windsurfing, guesthouses and visitors from all over Brazil and abroad, many of whom come back wanting to stay.

How do you get there?

Fly into Natal International Airport (NAT), in São Gonçalo do Amarante, a little over 100 km away. From there it is a car or a transfer, about an hour and a half. Natal has direct international flights, including to Lisbon, so many trips from Europe take one connection or none.

That short distance from the airport is what makes the town work for vacation rentals and second homes: you land in Natal and arrive the same day.

What are the beaches like?

Praia da Xepa

The town center. Bars, shops and the restaurant street, busy at night in high season.

Praia do Maceió

The calmest stretch, a short walk from the center. Quiet without being far from anything.

Praia do Cardeiro

Another quiet beach next to the center, with houses and guesthouses facing the sea.

Ponta do Santo Cristo

The kitesurf spot. Schools and kite clubs sit on the sand, and in season the afternoon sky fills with kites.

Tourinhos

A beach farther from town, good for a half-day trip.

When is the best time to go?

For kitesurfing, September to March, when the wind is at its strongest and most constant. It is also the busiest season. Because the wind season runs into the Brazilian summer, the town stays busy for much of the year, and that is what keeps demand for guesthouses and vacation rentals steady.
